Leading modular expert Portakabin has completed a suite of high quality buildings for Ørsted as it extends its site at Walney

With more than 20 years of experience in developing, building and running wind farms, offshore wind market leader Ørsted looked to Portakabin for onshore office accommodation solutions at their base in Barrow-in-Furness.

Ørsted, is currently constructing its Walney Extension project, which will become the world’s largest operational offshore wind farm on completion later this year – capable of providing electricity to more than half a million UK homes.

Tasked with delivering three separate buildings, Portakabin would be providing accommodation for the wind farm’s construction team as well as operations and maintenance teams.

For one building, 40 modules were installed in just one week and have created light, spacious and comfortable accommodation for the Ørsted team during the expansion of the site. The modular building system also offers exceptional levels of insulation and air-tightness, providing a safe, comfortable, warm and welcoming office environment.

The two-storey energy efficient building includes; office space, conference room facilities (including video conferencing), a canteen, a storage area for offshore diving personal protective equipment (PPE) plus changing facilities including showers, toilets and locker rooms.

Two further buildings were added; one for the wind farm’s construction team and one single storey building as an interim operations office.

Steve Andrews, Senior Project Manager at Ørsted, said: “We engaged Portakabin to complete the installation of the onshore support base offices at Barrow-in-Furness. Portakabin performed well with a good HSE performance and met the requirements of the site to a tight deadline.”

Shirley Swann, Utilities Specialist at Portakabin explains how Portakabin is becoming the supplier of choice for challenging clients in renewables: “With the UK leading the way in offshore wind energy and with some of the best resources in Europe at its disposal, the Ørsted site at Barrow is well placed to support the efficiency targets set for the industry by 2020.

“It’s great to see how we’ve been able to introduce modern, multi-functional spaces here. Driving cost efficiencies for offshore wind energy is vital to ensure its longevity in the UK. The flexible options Portakabin can offer on challenging sites such as this make us a quality choice for projects in need of multi-use space.”

Barrow Offshore Wind Farm was one of the first offshore wind farms built in the UK. Situated off the northwest coast of England, it comprises of 30 turbines with a combined total capacity of 90 MW. The new Walney Extension wind farm features 87 turbines with a total capacity of 659 MW.
